Mic Issue
« on: Tue, 25 Aug 09, 08:11 GMT+5 »
Yes, laugh if you wish, but I am still playing BF2. My problem is, I broke my old headset and bought a new one recently and I cannot seem to get the mic to work.

Any advice?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Ahem. Yes. I've even tried re-installing the headset. Doesn't work.

I have to assume it's a game conflict of some kind. How does one get into the mic recognition/set up thingy that pops up during install of BF2?

Are you sure it is not muted! Does it work at all?  Often the mic mute is often hard to find in windows. I always just used MSN Messenger and when you try to setup speech it says'the mic is muted, do you want to unmute it'....

Is it just a headset that uses a line in and headphone out of USB?

And we still love BF2. I invested a lot of money and effort into it for a couple of years.

Well, my control panel for the headset says it's active... 'course, that doesn't mean anything. I may try to get on Vent and see if it works there.

If it does, what then might be the issue?

need more information:

USB or Sound card connected?

Headphones working?

Mic Working?

note:
Mic muted can occur in more than one place.

USB connection. Yes, the headphones work fine. Just for clarification, I did have some trouble getting the sound to work at first, not just in-game but in general when I first installed them.
Should I re-install the game?

I dont think it is necesary to reinstal the game.  USB headsets can be a pain though as they consume a lot of USB bandwidth. I have to have mine finely balanced as I have USB speakers too and that has screwed me before. Most never know USB2 has a bandwidth limitation until they hit it..  NOt saying this is your problem though.

What OS, win2k, XP,  Vista?  Either way look for some kind of trooubleshooting in the ControlPanel first.

I am using Vista and UNder Control Panel > Sound > Recording I see an nice Microphone
When I make a noise, the bar goes up and down!

Ok. Vista recognizes my mic just fine. It's enabled everywhere I can find to look.

In the BF2 options page, where you can do the mic test? It won't do anything. Suggestions?

Make sure it's the defalt recording device.  Sometimes with USB or Bluetooth audio devices they are not always automatically made the default sound device.  Sometimes your soundcard's mic or line input is selected the default even though the USB headset is plugged in and detected.  BF is going to assume that the default recording device is your mic.

Actually, it's funny you mention that. I didn't realize, until I started playing around with it, that the headset mic would be designated so. I made sure it was, just in case. Sooooooo, I'm still having my problem. I noticed that there is supposedly a help utility on the disk. I may try that tonight.
