iPhone 4G launch

Ive seen the concepts that have been around for a good time. I have an iPhone 3G. I upgrade is due in March this year.

I have seen talk of the new 4G(?) coming in the summer. If so I will wait for then and bypass the 3Gs.

Maybe the google Nexus One phone will be out on Jan 5th?

Just bought my wife the 3GS (she was on the 3G and did not want to wait for next release!) so the next generation will hit in June for certain. I hope WiMax or LTE support will be part of the picture, but I doubt it.

The Nexus One's "leaked" specs means no 3G if you are on a network outside of TMobile in the USA. That sucks. I am interested in the phone, if simply to keep the competitive pressure up on .

There have not been any significant rumors (that I personally have found) about the upcoming iphone.  If I would have it my way, I would appreciate a new screen and resolution, possibly AMOLED.  I am also hoping, around CES/Macworld time (which is... now-ish) they port Google Navigation to the iphone OS.  Boy, that'd be super.


I agree with 'flayer, though.  I was contemplating purchasing an unlocked Nexus.  Though it has the handicapped 3g, it still has edge, and I would be able to utilize voice, and basic functionality of the phone itself.


I guess we'll see.

Seems the world is set for Android today with a looming press announcement.

I shall hold you to that June timeline and make my scratched 3G work on for its money.

Apple needs WiFi engineers for 802.11a and 802.11n, according to a job ad posted on the Apple site

802.11N with a carrier allowing UMA would be sweet.

The Engadget review of the Nexus One left a lot to be desired, both of the writing and the device.

I still want one.  Bad.  Only to play around with of course.  And now having the HD2 officially coming to T-Mobile as well?  Sheesh, that phone is a small slice of heaven.  You know, aside it utilizing WinMo...

Pretty excited for this soon-to-hopefully-be announcement.  Though I am also excited about the use of core i3/5/7 chips in the Macbook Pro line, assuming they are at all.  That is when I more then likely will be purchasing a new laptop.

Looks like the rumours for the 4G coming June/July remain accurate. I am looking forward to this:

Here are the five iPad technologies which a site thinks will be adopted by the iPhone 4G when it is launched later this year.

(1) A Large Screen
The Apple iPhone 3GS kept the same screen size (3.5-inch) as the two previous generations. We can't help but believe that Apple will this time, slightly bump the screen size of its smartphone to match the screen size of its contemporary competitors (like the 4.3-inch size of the HTC Touch HD). We expect it to be at least 4-inch in diagonal).

But then, Apple might have to make the iPhone screen more "square" to accommodate for the 4:3 screen size format of the iPad or require that developers do some serious tweaking to their apps.

(2) Processor
The iPad was the first device to come with Apple first custom-made silicon chip, the A4. Nothing much is known about the processor except that it has been built by PA Semi engineers, runs at 1GHz, is system-on-chip solution (comes with an integrated GPU) and is almost certainly ARM-based

Expect to see a refined Cortex-A8 clocked at a lower speed compared to the iPad but higher than last year's 3GS. Apple is likely to have integrated the more advanced version of the PowerVR SGX which equips the iPhone 3GS, the SGX Series5XT.

(3) 802.11n
That's a given, the next iPhone will have 802.11n. Why? Because it makes sense to standardise components use across the whole range, therefore cementing the belief that the iPad is nothing more than a giant iPod Touch. Seriously though, it doesn't make sense to go for anything lower than the 802.11n.

(4) iBookstore
Apple knows that it will have to release the iBookstore sooner or later to give some momentum to the service and accelerate sales. Amazon already has an iPhone Kindle App thanks to its acquisition of Stanza and there are some lesser known players as well such as GoodReader Lite or Bookshelf.

(5) iPhone OS 3.2
It is unlikely that you will get iPad's iPhone OS 3.2 as such but expect some features to appear on the iPhone OS 4.0. Engadget found that it may include video conferencing, file uploads/downloads and local storage, customisable background, a spell-checker and USB Host support or expanded Bluetooth support.
